Every time I see this statistic, I have to cringe. While breastfeeding and higher IQ are correlated, that does not necessarily mean that the higher IQs are due to breastfeeding. Studies conducted to examine those findings further have shown that it appears environmental and genetic factors (which could make it more likely for the mother to breastfeed) appear to have more to do with the resulting higher IQ than the act of breastfeeding itself. Another study shows gains are only associated with those with certain genetic make-up.
So. I really wish we’d stop tossing around the “breastfeeding makes your babies smarter” thing until we actually know more about it. Breastfeeding has a ton of positives—that it’s free, healthy food for your baby seems to be the most critical to me. I don’t really see the point in throwing in a bunch of claims that we really don’t have conclusive information to support.
Um, excuse me I am a SCIENTIST
And if there’s anything I learned in school, it’s that correlation ALWAYS equals causation, especially when we can shame women into feeling bad about their personal choices
